Zane has been doing debate team, he's a freshman in High School. Yesterday he came home saying he was going to join track. Yay! Physical exercise is good.

Kind of a girlie cake. Since I'm going to eat most of it, it might as well be!

We've got a tradition where Zane and I can have birthday cake for breakfast every day until it's gone. Day 1 of cake for breakfast.

Zane started cross country last week and he started high school this week.

Although he's a teenager and very, very cool, he still allowed his mother to pick him up from his dad's house, drive him to school, park in front of the school and take pictures of him walking to school. His one request was that I don't get out of the car. I actually didn't but I was tempted.

Zane the hero! Zane had a little excitement this week. While running behind the team, he heard, "HELP! HELP!" He thought it was one of the other kids messing with him and Zane said to the voice, "Are you messing with me?!" The voice said, "No!" Zane went into some trees behind a secluded house and there was a badly injured man laying on the ground. A cottonwood tree fell over and hit him (but did not pin him to the ground). His leg was obviously deformed. Zane wasn't supposed to have his cell phone on him but he did and he called 911 and he and some team mates stayed with the man until the ambulance arrived. The guy was flight for lifed out to Idaho Falls where he is being treated for a broken back, broken ribs, dislocated hip, broken shin and ankle. Way to go Zane!!

This is what a kid who's spent 28 days in the woods looks like.

Zane's trip was great, the conversation pretty much went as in the predicted description in the last post. He ended up being in the Big Horns, not the Winds as we thought. Fortunately the National Outdoor Leadership School gave us a summary and review of Zane's trip and performance so we have some idea of what happened on his trip!! He says his favorite part of the trip was visiting Bomber Mountain the site of a 1943 B-17 crash.

He got an A- overall in the trip. Here are some excerpts from Zane's review. My comments in orange

"At first, Zane appeared to be skeptical about the way NOLS facilitates outdoor education." Go figure! Wonder where he gets that attitude.
"Fires were something that interested Zane. He was offered the opportunity to teach a class on Leave No Trace fires, which he took." Finally, Zane's years of playing with fire and blowing things up becomes useful!!
"Zane also excelled greatly in leadership. He was voted by his peers to be one of the student leaders on their small group expeditions." There was a 3 night, 4 day independent small group expedition that Zane was the leader of.
"Zane has proven to be a competent outdoorsman and fisherman, we encourage Zane to explore his passion for the outdoors. He would also excel at a NOLS outdoor educator course if he was interested when he's older."

Sorry I haven't updated Zane's blog in such a long time. It's been a busy summer! Zane's on his National Outdoor Leadership School course until tomorrow. He should be getting out of the back country today. Here's how my conversation with him will go tomorrow when I see him:

Mom: Hey Zane!!! How are you?? How was your course?
Zane: Good
Mom: Did you have fun?
Zane: Yeah
Mom: Anything interesting happen?
Zane: Yeah
Mom: Did you enjoy it?
Zane: Yeah
Mom: Would you go back again??
Zane: Maybe
Mom: Did you make any new friends?
Zane: Kind of. Mom, can I go now? I want to text with my friends. I'll see you on Monday.

Well, school's over on May 30th for Zane and the kids in Teton Valley. Track season has ended and field trips have begun. Zane and his class went to Quake Lake up in West Yellowstone, Montana on Monday. The trip wasn't too fun for anyone, it was 5 hours on the bus, the road to Mesa Falls was still snowed in, it was snowing at Quake Lake and the ticks were out full force. Zane has another trip on Friday and Saturday and it's sure to be much more successful and fun! His Gifted and Talented class is going down to Space Camp in Salt Lake City. Zane's gone there twice previously and had an awesome time. They're also going to the SLC zoo. FUN!

Hi everyone, this is Zane. I am finally posting on my blog. Last Friday the 25 we had our third track meet. Our boys took first overall. In my events I got two first places, one second place and forth or fifth place. Hope everyone is having a good spring.

Teton Middle School is having it's first track meet on Thursday, April 10th in Firth, Idaho. The kids are practicing hard in the Middle School parking lot because the track is still under a couple of feet of snow (see previous post)

Zanearoo update

Sorry I haven't posted in a long time. Zane had spring break and went to Colorado Springs to visit Grandma Carol & Grandpa Duane. He had a great time and, as usual, no one has sent me a picture from the entire 8 days. Hint. Zane's dad picked him up at the airport and Zane immediately went to Challis, Idaho to go steelheading for the weekend. School started Monday as did the 2008 track season. Below are pictures of Teton Middle School's track practice. Many of you will find them amusing. I find them depressing! Zane's report card came in and he's got straight As for 3rd quarter. Way to go Zane!

It's been a while since I've posted on Zane's behalf. He's been a little boring.

Winter sports has started with Teton Middle School and Zane's going up to Grand Targhee Ski area to snowboard on Wednesday's for the next 4 weeks. Today's his first day. I hope he's having fun!

Yesterday was his 14th birthday. The cake is a "dirt cake". It should be called a ridiculously nauseatingly sweet cake. Even Zane couldn't eat it for breakfast this morning. I usually let Zane eat birthday cake every morning after his birthday until it's gone.

NOLS Scholarships

Zane is the proud recipient of a $1,500 Paul Petzoldt Legacy Scholarship and $500 from the General Fund for a total of a $2,000 scholarship toward the National Outdoor Leadership School 28 day backpacking course in Wyoming's Wind River Range this summer. Zane's going to have an awesome adventure and he's fortunate to have this opportunity.

Dear Mother Nature,

Please let Spring come soon. My son, Zane, has been home from school due to cold temperatures and blowing snow too many days this month. It's at least 5 days so far this month. His room is clean, his chores are done, the dog has been played with excessively and he's even bored enough to help his mother and step-father shovel.

Please Mother Nature, warm up a little and only snow moderately. We've resorted to this, dressing the dog up and posing her. We've entitled this one, "Our Little Eskimo Dog"

Zane got Into the Wild for Christmas from his Grandma Karen. He finished the book in 2 days! Hmmm I seem to have reversed the picture, oops! Zane is in Ohio right now with his Dad, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. I'm sure he's having a fantastic time because he can't find time to call. Hint, hint Zane....

Ms. Witek's class did a courtroom exercise in the actual Teton County Courtroom. Some kids were on the jury, some were lawyers, some were on trial. Zane (white shirt) and Ryan (to the right of Zane) were the defendants. 2 real lawyers actually assisted with the exercise. Zane and Ryan were found not guilty of arson.

We've doggy sat a 10 week old puppy named, Nicodemus. He's a Chihuahau and he's adorable. We had Nic last night and he and Zane really hit it off. As a matter of fact, Nic wouldn't stop whining unless Zane was in the room!

Zane's been accepted into a 28 day backpacking course in the Wind River Mountains with the National Outdoor Leadership School! After applying and being accepted, he had to get a physical.

Today we're starting on scholarship applications for the course. It's expensive and has many unexpected costs (the above physical was $140!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

For all who have asked what they can get Zane for Christmas, please consider giving him an REI gift certificate or Cabella's gift certificate so he can buy gear for the course. NOLS has some very specific gear requirements. Or you can give him a little bit of cash to save toward paying for the course. Zane's Grandpa Locke and Grandma Locke have paid for a portion of the course, Zane has put $1000 of his own money toward the course (instead of a car!). I promise if you decide to send any $ to Zane for Christmas, it will be deposited in the savings account.

ON THE OTHER HAND, don't feel like you ever have to get the kid anything!!!! He has so much already.

I will post later with miscellaneous pictures that I have taken of Zane and the fam over the last month. Sorry to get behind. It's been a hectic month for me.

Did you watch the video in the last post where Zane is trying to make iron oxide? Mr. Science went from a jelly jar and 2 nails to a 5 gallon bucket and rebar! He's making iron oxide...don't ask what for!!

14 seconds of bubbling and excitement.

We went to the National Wildlife Art Museum
in Jackson, Wyoming. The elk are a piece of art at the entrance. The museum collection was really impressive for a) all animal pictures b) the museum is in the middle of no where! We saw a Warhol print and an O'Keefe. We also saw several Beirstadt. We liked these bison pictures a lot.

You can barely see the museum because it blends so well with the landscape.

We weren't allowed to take pictures in the museum, hence of the outside pictures. In the background is the National Elk Refuge. We didn't see any live elk. They're in rutting season now. I've actually heard some bugling in the middle of the night (4 seconds, click on it!).

Spud week

Well, it's Spud Week. It's the week that school is out so that the teachers and older students can assist with harvesting potatoes. The majority of kids and students are hanging out in this crummy weather (Teton Webcam).

Paul and I missed the girl's race! Sorry girls!!! Luckily, I got this picture of the girl runners enjoying the minidisco ball and the Go Teton XC poster. We're in the Middle School library. Isn't the bulletin board in the background great?!

Everyone did great! The girls finished in 6th place overall in the league and the boys finished in 3rd place. Well done all and good job Coach Krumpen! Thank you for a great season!

The Middle School XC team has it's Championship meet at Rigby Pond on Friday, September 27 at 3:00 pm MDT.

Yesterday the kids ran to Corner Drug's soda fountain for some ice creams! Fun! Zane and the other 8th grade boys were too cool to show up.

The last couple of pictures are of Zane in his new team sweatshirt. All the team members got them.

Zane's standardized testing scores came back from his Spring testing and he did AWESOME! Better than the Teton 401 School District averages and better than the State of Idaho averages for 8th grade for every test.
THE TETON MUSTANG MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY TEAM HAS THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEET AT RIGBY POND ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28. Go Mustangs!! I'll update pictures and results Friday night or Saturday.
Zane's agreed to attend a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) course next summer. He's been persuaded and I'm ecstatic. Zane will learn some outdoor skills from someone he will listen to! He's undecided about exactly which course he will take, they all sound great. Below are his choices.

It's a very expensive course and we're going to work many angles to pay for it. Zane's applying for 2 NOLS scholarships, Paul and I are saving money monthly and we've asked grandparents (with Zane's permission) to give money instead of presents for Christmas and his birthday. We've already got $1,100 of $5,000 ($1,000 is from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous at this time)! 20% paid!

Zane's had one cross country meet since the last post. He did GREAT! The XC meet was at Green Canyon, home of Green Canyon Hot Springs. The kids didn't swim but they did run. Zane finished 18th out of 88 kids. We're so proud of him!

Today he's got a meet in Star Valley, Wyoming. Star Valley is about an hour and a half drive (one way) from here. Oh the joys of rural living! I'll post Zane's results when I get them.

The preliminary information is in, Zane finished 14th out of the boys with a time of "9 something" for a 1.4 mile trail run. We were unable to go to this meet and have to rely on Zane's reports on the race. More later.
